MuST23 (Museum/Station May 23rd) is an immersive and interactive museum that, starting from the 1992 mafia massacre, tells the story of years of struggle and commitment in the fight against Cosa Nostra.

Not a “mafia museum” but a living memory of the massacre of May 23, 1992, which claimed the lives of Judge Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo, and three escort officers—Antonio Montinaro, Vito Schifani, and Rocco Dicillo. That tragic event becomes a narrative tool to tell, through new technologies, the story of resistance to the mafia and the commitment to enhancing the local territory, transforming the visit into a unique sensory experience. It is also a new way of telling the story of a place that is not just a stretch of highway blown apart, but a land capable of revealing great beauty.

An interactive and emotional experience

The use of cutting-edge technologies also allows the visitor to become the protagonist. You are the one who interacts with objects reconstructed through virtual reality, who starts the videos, chooses the path, and selects the stories to discover or the topics to explore in depth. A symbolic reminder of each of our roles in the fight against crime, and of the importance of participation and daily commitment.

The goal is to inform, educate, but also to move people emotionally. To raise awareness and inspire action. Learning about what happened over thirty years ago—when none of today’s students had yet been born—helps reduce the risk of indifference toward the mafia.

At the same time, the aim is also to make MuST23 a place for broader anti-mafia cultural production and engagement: through educational, cultural, social, and artistic activities.

Museum areas

  • Falcone’s words
After his death, Judge Falcone was almost canonized. Many claimed to be his friends or heirs, yet while he was still alive he was often isolated and hindered, if not openly obstructed. This is why we chose to begin with his own words—interviews and television appearances, shown on 8 screens inside one of the containers—without filters or intermediaries, giving space to his thoughts and insights
  • Giovanni Falcone: who was the number one enemy of Cosa Nostra?
We retrace the life and achievements of Giovanni Falcone through Rai archival footage. From his early years to the anti-mafia pool, his work in Rome, and the Maxi Trial, you will discover Falcone’s groundbreaking insights, the obstacles he faced, and the determination with which he overcame them, up to the attack that cost him his life. A story divided into eight chapters that you can explore in any order through interaction with a touchscreen.
  • The legacy of Falcone and Borsellino
A photographic exhibition created by the Ansa Sicilia news agency allows you to retrace the lives of the two most important magistrates in the global fight against the mafia.

  • Capaci - May 23, 1992 at 5:56 PM
Thanks to Oculus Meta Quest 3 headsets, you will travel back in time and find yourself in Capaci, on what remains of the highway, in the moments following the explosion. The virtual reality environment will let you experience powerful emotions that led many young people at the time to take action. Rai archival footage will allow you to listen to direct testimonies from survivors and first witnesses.
