Which image comes to your mind when you hear the word Mafia? Maybe the Godfather?

Our virtual tour is your occasion to go beyond the stereotypes, retrace the history of ‘Cosa Nostra’ and learn how the civic Anti-mafia movement was born between the 80s and 90s.

By using archive photos and videos, you’ll get to see how life was in Sicily during those years ruled by extreme and fierce violence. You’ll learn how Mafia imposed the payment of a sum of money, called “pizzo”, to all shops and businesses, and which were the consequences for those who refused to pay. We will reflect together on the real essence of pizzo, the way it works, its dynamics and consequences.

We will introduce you to Addiopizzo, the organisation we volunteer for – a grassroots movement whose aim is to encourage a process of collective rebellion against Mafia. We will go through its origins: it began with a simple sticker and now it’s become a powerful anti-mafia movement. And we are so proud of it!

Addiopizzo leads an ethical consumption campaign in support of shop owners who refuse to pay the “pizzo”. You’ll listen to their personal experiences as victims of the Mafia and their path towards their final rebellion. Some of them run hotels and restaurants, so we also push “mafia-free” tourism.

At the end of this virtual tour, you will think of Sicily in a different way. It will be an eye-opening experience, we promise!

Your contribution will be used to reinforce our anti-racket campaign and to extend our network in order to strengthen the mafia-free movement in Sicily. In addition, some funds will be used to foster social inclusion among disadvantaged children and teenagers living in Palermo’s poorest neighbourhoods.
