Itinerary

1° day

Arrivo a Modica - Cooking class and dinner

We recommend arriving at the airport (the closest are Catania and Comiso) by the afternoon, so that after making your own way to Modica and checking in at your accommodation in the city centre, you will have some free time to start exploring Modica’s rich array of monuments and sights.

In the afternoon, Rosellina will be waiting for you in her large kitchen to prepare some typical Modican dishes together. This cooking class is a chance to immerse yourself in the local culinary tradition alongside the people who live in the city.

Dinner and overnight stay at I Tetti di Siciliando, the first non-hotel accommodation to open in Modica, housed in an early 20th-century noble residence that was restored after years of abandonment.

2° day

Chocolate and solidarity

A full day at your leisure to explore Modica, a jewel of a city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nestled among the Iblean rocks, the city unfolds across a plateau that descends from the hills into a concave valley, once a riverbed. This is why the urban layout is organised into several neighbourhoods set at different elevations.

Despite its medieval origins, it is the late Baroque style that dominates the city’s historic palaces and churches, most of which were rebuilt after the earthquake that struck eastern Sicily in 1693.

The area has presumably been inhabited since prehistoric times, as suggested by the many rock-cut sites surrounding the city. From the Middle Ages through the 19th century, however, the County of Modica gained a strategic economic and cultural role, to the point that the whole territory of what is now the Province of Ragusa fell under its jurisdiction.

Stroll through history-soaked lanes, narrow alleyways and long staircases winding between tightly packed houses in the districts of Modica Alta and Modica Bassa, then suddenly opening onto majestic and theatrical architectural masterpieces.

Meet at Casa Don Puglisi’s focacceria for lunch featuring typical Modican scacce and, of course, arancini.

Afterwards, you will meet a member of the Casa Don Puglisi cooperative to discover how Modica chocolate is made, through a demonstration in the centre’s showroom, and to taste the intense flavours of its different varieties. You will learn all the secrets of Modica chocolate and more. Casa Don Puglisi is also a welcoming centre for single mothers and women in difficulty, and it has promoted the economic and social empowerment of vulnerable people through the production of chocolate, pastries, and other local specialities.

Dinner at your leisure and overnight stay.
